Week 1: Introduction

Hello all!  My name is Liza-Ann (pronounced lee-zuh), and this is my second semester of my junior year!  I took Laura's Mythology and Folklore course last semester, and I loved it so much I had to see what Epics of India had in store!  I have also learned to enjoy the flexibility of online courses, so I decided to make three out of my five classes of the semester this way.

Hm, a little bit about me... I  am currently a pre-medical student, but plan to take a gap year after I graduate next spring.  Instead of completely taking a year off of school, my plan is to take master's courses while I apply for medical school.  If anyone is taking Cell Bio or Intro to Molecular Bio, we should definitely meet up to study!  I have a young son, who keeps me very busy, and this leaves me with limited availability to dedicate my time to campus activities.  Before last semester ended I adopted a kitten named Piper, and she can be a handful as well, but we are getting used to each other.  Although my schedule is pretty hectic, I am apart of FSA (Filipino Student Association).  Our executive board was able to bring back the group last semester, and we are always looking for new members (even if you aren't Filipino and just interested in the culture).

Now that I am done trying to advertise my organization (haha), I guess I can try to elaborate on my hobbies.  When I have time, I love to cook or try new restaurants.  Although I try to refrain during the semester, I love to binge watch series on TV and Netflix.  I love being outdoors and exploring areas that I am unfamiliar with.  Over the break, I was able to visit my family that live in California, and let me tell you, it was a life changing experience.  At this point I look forward to graduating in the next three semesters, and moving onto the next phase in life!

  1. Hello Liza-Ann! It's nice to meet you, and I hope you had a fantastic weekend! I just read through your introduction post, and I must say it sounds like you have a very busy, but very exciting life. Your son is absolutely adorable; he looks like a real sweetheart. You're taking three online courses? Wow, that is awesome. This is my first online course, and I'm excited to see how it goes, but also a little nervous about managing my time. I see you like to cook, unfortunately, I am not a very good cook, but I like to try sometimes when I have the time. Binge watching TV and Netflix is a problem of mine... I try to avoid it also, but sometimes I just have to do it. Your picture from California is beautiful! I have never been there, but it is on my bucket list of things to do. It was so nice to learn some things about you!

  2. Hi Liza-Ann! Your kiddo is adorable! I have two little ones myself, they are 4 and 2. Being a parent has definetly made my college experience different from my friends without kids. My babies provide me with inspiration and motivation to reach for my dreams, and I don't think I would be as determined to be successful if I didn't have them in my life from a young age. I, like you, love to binge watch shows, and it seems that I always discover a great one to watch right around finals or some other important time during the semester. Good luck on your endeavors with Medical School, you are certainly in for a crazy ride.

  3. Hi Liza-Ann! I do have to say that I admire your dedication! I can only imagine just how difficult it would be to juggle class, your son, and a new kitten. Not to mention pre-med! With my major, I often take classes that pre-med majors would take, and I can attest to the fact that they are difficult, yet you seem to have everything under control. (can you tell I'm jealous, ha ha).
Netflix is such a blessing and a curse. I, too often find myself wanting to watch entire seasons of shows within one day. I really enjoyed getting to know you, good luck with your semester!

  4. It is always fun to get to meet people all over again, Liza-Ann! I read all these Introductions at the beginning of the semester... but often by the end of the semester, I forget what I have learned here and just remember people's projects! I remembered that you were involved with Filipino Student Association (let me know if there are any events I can help publicize!), but I don't think I knew about Piper (she looks adorable!) and........ I did not remember that you had this sweet little boy! He and Piper must have so much fun! And I know he must have enjoyed California. That picture of Baker Beach made me feel so sentimental (I used to live in Daly City, just a little bit to the south of there). Sooooo, welcome back, and I hope you will have a great time in this class. I am excited to see what you will do for your project this time! :-)

  5. Hello Liza! I am also a pre-medical student! I have already applied to medical schools and am hoping to receive and acceptance within the next few weeks. Best of luck to you with your medical school endeavors; it is a long ride! Your son is absolutely precious!! And of course so is your kitty. That picture of San Francisco is beautiful! It is a different world up there.

  6. Hello again Liza! I took Mythology and Folklore last year too, so I think I remember reading your posts! Nice to see you again. Online classes are great in my opinion. They require more attention, but the flexibility outweighs the cons by far. I'm glad everything is going great for you school related. I hope you get accepted for Medical school!

  7. Liza-Ann, first of all, your son is adorable and so is your kitten. I am also a cat person. Also, binge watching is the best way to watch television, in my opinion. If there is a bad reality television show marathon on, you can bet that I will there watching as I clean my house or do homework. Good luck this semester!

  8. Hi Liza-Ann!

I love taking online classes, myself, and have always taken 1-4 online since I started college. It really does help with time management. I feel that a lot less time is wasted when a class is online, because I'm not commuting to school for it and sitting in class listening to a lecture on what I'm about to read or already did read, lol.

Your son and kitten are both precious! I think all children need an animal companion for proper development ;)

You must be very busy with all those classes and a child! I commend you for your hard work--not a lot of people could handle that (myself included). I love to binge watch shows as well.. ugh… I'm slowly losing self-discipline because of it and have not gotten started working on my capstone at all as a result..whoops.

I love the outdoors and exploring new places as well :D especially on horseback. Enjoy your semester and good luck to you in all your pursuits!

  9. Hello Liza, I am trying to transition to more online classes as well. Once i tried them they just seemed to fit my busy lifestyle. Piper looks like she's quite playful. I think cats are so funny. My roommate in advanced training with the army was Filipino so I got to hear all about his culture. I love food and some of the dishes he would describe sounded amazing! Good luck this semester with all your classes.

  10. Liza-Ann I can only imagine how much of a handful a child and a kitten are as you are going through college. However, I bet the online class format helps you very much having enough time each day to complete your assignments whenever you choose. That is by far my favorite part of them as 9 of my 18 hour are online this semester. The gap year has always been interesting to me, however, I chose to not take one for law school and instead opted to only take a week off before starting the law summer program in order to make my fall more manageable. I guess for pre-med it makes more sense though. Good luck with everything!

  11. Hey Liza-Ann! I’ve been hearing so much about the Mythology and Folklore class. It seems like it’s so interesting! I’ll definitely have to look into it sometime. That’s awesome you’re pre-med! Best of luck with all of your endeavors. That picture of your son is absolutely adorable! He looks like such a cutie!!

  12. Hey Liza-Ann! First off, your baby boy is SO SO SO SO adorable! And so is that little kitten! I have a cat too, so thats one thing we have in common! I'm also in my second semester of junior year and pre-med! I'm a a microbiology major. I actually took molecular biology my sophomore year and cell bio last semester. Cell biology was absolutely horrible... but molecular biology was great! I have quite a number of friends that are currently taking both classes that I'm sure are in your class too.

I agree with you about the flexibility of online classes. I've been trying to take online classes more because of how they are structured and work better for me, since I'm someone who works at my own pace and online classes allow me to do that to some extent.

Anyhow, best of luck with your classes and everything!

  13. Hi Liza-Ann! I also love the flexibility of online courses, and wish my major offered more. Piper is super cute, I love kitties. Thanks for sharing a picture. I have always wanted to try Filipino food! I can appreciate your love to cook and binge watch Netflix. In fact I would love to be watching some Netflix as we speak. California is definitely on my lists of places to visit. Bakers beach looks gorgeous. Best of luck with the rest of the semester!

  14. Hey Liza-Ann! I too took Mythology and Folklore last semester! It was awesome was it not? That is so awesome that you have a son and a cat and you are going to attend med school! I am very impressed. Your priorities far exceed anything that I would be able to do! Keep up the good work!

  15. Liza-Ann,

you sound like such a sweet person! Your babies look like they love to have fun and I'm sure they keep you busy! I admire your dedication to your education immensely! I can't imagine the difficulty in going to college while raising a family.

I also have found myself favoring online courses, but it really depends on the professor whether or not the class ends up being good or not. I've taken a few online classes that were more difficult because the professor really didn't adapt the material to benefit an online class. And they hardly ever utilize all the tools they have. Laura has done an amazing job fine-tuning this (and I'm sure her other) online class!

I have family that lives in California, as well! While it's a beautiful place, it's not somewhere I'd ever want to live. Did you only visit the San Fransisco area, or did you go south, too? Going from the midwest to the coast can be a big change, and vice versa - I came from the East coast to Oklahoma and even after 5 years am still surprised by some things.

  16. Hi Liza-Ann, such a unique name you have!! I am also a pre-med student, on the verge of going to medical school, so, I can definitely see why you would want to take a gap year. That is actually a really great idea and gives you time to prepare yourself for medical school. I have taken cell biology and molecular biology before, and they are pretty daunting subjects. I wish you all the luck with that!! Your cat and son are just so precious!! How adorable! You seem like such a driven girl and I hope that you are successful in the future! Good luck girl.

  17. Hey Liza-Ann,
I have really liked this class so far and I if I wasn’t graduating I think that I would definitely take Mythology and Folklore. It definitely sounds like you have a very hectic schedule with school, you kitchen, and family life. I think that sometimes if you take a break and then come back you come back recharged and ready for everything! Good luck with medical school and everything else as well!

  18. Hey Liza-Ann!
It's so nice to meet you and read your introduction. I applaud you on being pre-med. I was pre-med for one day. Mainly because I knew before I started class that this wasn't what I wanted to do. But alas, it is a wonderful major for those who are strong enough to endure! Your son is so cute! I hope that you are having a wonderful semester, and that class hasn't hit you too hard. Have a wonderful and restful spring break! Also, I'm so jealous you went to Cali. My mom is originally from there, but I have never made it out there.

  19. Hi Liza-Ann!
I am also trying to get into medical school. It is already a lot of work so I wish you luck as you make this journey. That is a great idea to take master schooling courses while trying to get into medical school. It is great to have a back up plan. You never know. You may like that path better anyways. I love the picture you used near San Francisco. It's beautiful. California is so pretty but too expensive so aren't those people lucky.

  20. Hi, Liza-Ann! First off, your son is so adorable, that smile he’s giving in the picture melts my heart! And of course your cat is also very cute! I know it’s hard to get along with them at first. You have quite a bit on your plate as a pre-med student who also has a child. I am sure that just those two aspects of your life take up quite a bit of time, but it’s awesome that you have it all planned out well! Like you, I love cooking and trying out new restaurants. I am going to Portland, Oregon next week and I can’t wait to try good places around there. I hope that the rest of your semester is awesome!
